OLDUVAI GORGE
Olduvai Gorge is renowned as the cradle of mankind due to the discovery of early human remains by Dr. Mary Leakey. The remains are dated at 1.75 million years and because of the massive jaws and teeth were first known as “Nutciacker man” the skull of the Australopithecus bosei its scientific name, is now displayed in the national museum in dare s salaam and a cart of the skill and Lactol foot prints which were also found by Mary Leakey are on display at the Olduvai Museum.
THE GORGE
Olduvai gorge measures 200 to 500 feet deep and is subdivided into five wide spread strata called bed, I, Bed II Bed III , Bed IV and the Ndutu beds. Each bed houses a wealth of datable sedimentary layers which provide researchers with information on some of the first humans and fascinating basis for study of their lifestyle.
