LAKE CHALA

Lake Chala is a crate lake on the eastern flank of mount Kilimanjaro. It is located in mamsera chini village in Rombo district and lies on the border of Tanzania and Kenya. Lake chala is entirely fed and drained by underground streams. The source of the water into the lake is mount Kilimanjaro and the lake drains into lake jipe 30 km away.

Chala is the largest crater lake in northern Tanzania  it has  diameter of  3 km and a surface area of 4.2. sqkm. The crater walls are  an average  80 meters high from water level and the maximum depth of the lake is 90 meters. The crate wall are very steep.

There lots of things  to do at lake chala the area around the lake provides  opportunity for camping nature walks, and elephant viewing elephant from the neighboring game reserves of  Tsavo and Nkomazi still use chala as part of their ancient ground and are frequently seen them. It is also possible to swim in the lake.

Bird watching is another activity to do around Chala about 200 species of birds have been recorded there. There also some few other animals to be seen around the area
